Older Macs have FireWire 400, and so the owners of such a machine may have an external backup drive also powered by this means/cabling. However when the older Mac is upgraded the new one will only have the faster FireWire 800 port. So this adaptor will connect the new Mac, for example, to an older backup disk using the old cable.
